Hi, I am Sonia!
Actually, my name is Sofia but my parents decided that they liked Sonia better for some reason!
This website is my dream to do something different and share everything I learned from my Cretan grandmother and my mother, who has roots form the island of Cefallonia, along with new wisdom gained while struggling to be healthy while everything around us is not.
When I was little, I spent many summers in Crete. As you know, the Cretan cuisine is the healthiest on Earth! As a result, I learned a lot about Cretan cooking.
My mother also loved cooking and entertaining, and I always found my self in her kitchen serving and helping her. Later, I started experimenting in the kitchen by altering the original recipes, giving them a new flare and personal touch.
As life goes on, I grew up to earn a Computer Science degree and ended up working for the telecom industry in Greece. Then, I met my husband Nikos who was vacationing in Greece and eventually moved to the New York City area (North New Jersey).
Living in the NY area, the culinary capital of the world, I had the opportunity to try the best of many different cuisines. I love cooking so I always tried adopting what I tasted to something better and healthier. I had many friends tell me that I should open a restaurant but I thought that having this blog would be as much fun while it allows me to spend time with my beautiful 4 y/o daughter Konstantina.
After moving to the US, I struggled with deteriorating health and unexplained weight gain. As I researched my issues more, I begun realizing that the issue is the modern food ingredients as well as some of the ingredients that just should NOT be on our diet.
So, I started exploring and photographing the dishes my friends and family always loved and added a few more. I steered away from the bad ingredients and even more, I went mostly paleo. I still will have some sheep and goat milk cheese or yogurt and sparingly some white rice.
On a personal note, going Paleo, I have started losing some of that weight and I started feeling better. Since I am having some dairy, which is not paleo approved, I could not use this characteristic for my site.
My recipes will be mostly Greek and Mediterranean spiced with my favorite recipes from other cuisines.
